Balls

As an early birthday present I was gifted with the book Kerstballen breien (Julekuler by Arne and Carlos) a couple of weeks ago, a big hype in Europe. Funny enough I had just written about it in the November 2011 newsletter for Arthur Bales so I immediately took it to the shop so people could have a look at it.

Sadly the Dutch translation is a bit sloppy. I mean seriously, use the same method of decreasing both on the left side and the right side? Anybody who has ever seen a sock pattern knows that this can be done much neater and if I interpret the photos correctly the original pattern was written like that too.

Anyway, I'm really happy with the gift and I am now finally getting around to actually knitting some balls. The first one (see left) was knit in Elle Marco and I must say I had higher hopes for it. This yarn is fluffy (meaning it makes me sneeze) and it looks homespun but not in a good way.

The next one is made from a little old (stash) ball of Regia 4-fädig Brasil Colour. This sock yarn makes the ball a bit small so I adjusted the pattern. The colours are working out really nice.

Bij wijze van vroeg verjaarskado kreeg ik een paar weken geleden het boek Kerstballen breien (Julekuler by Arne and Carlos), een hele hype in Europa. Grappig genoeg had ik er juist over geschreven in de november-nieuwsbrief van Arthur Bales dus nam ik het boek meteen mee naar de winkel zodat iedereen even kon kijken.

Jammer genoeg is de Nederlandse vertaling nogal slordig. Ik bedoel, menen ze het serieus dat ze zowel voor de linker- als voor de rechterkantdezelfde manier van minderen gebruiken? Iedereen die weleens een sokkenpatroon heeft gezien weet dat dat veel netter kan en aan de foto's te zien is dat ook zoals het patroon geschreven was.

Maar goed. Ik ben heel blij met het kado en inmiddels kom ik ook eindelijk toe aan het breien van een paar ballen. De eerste (zie foto) deed ik met Elle Marco en ik moet zeggen dat ik op een beter resultaat gehoopt had. Het garen is pluizig (ik moet ervan niezen) en het ziet er handgesponnen uit, maar dat is hier geen goed teken.

De tweede is van een oud balletje uit de voorraad, Regia 4-fädig Brasil Colour. Dit sokkengaren maakt de bal een beetje klein dus heb ik het patroon aangepast. De kleuren worden heel leuk.

Replaced

We weren't entirely sure if she'd still want a replacement for her fav cuddle, but she latched onto it before it was even half unwrapped :) It is good that she can do without as well though.

Spare wheel cover

After I acquired a new car, that did not have its spare wheel on the back, my signature spare wheel cover sadly lived in a plastic bag. But it looks like I have found a new destination now.

An old friend overseas has a partner with just the same car that I had. The cover will be sent overseas in a few weeks and hopefully start a new life!

Nadat ik een nieuwe auto had verworven, eentje waarbij het reservewiel niet achterop zat, moest mijn opvallende reservewiel-hoes helaas verder in een plastic zak. Maar het zier ernaar uit dat ik een nieuwe bestemming heb gevonden.

Een oude vriendin in Nederland heeft een partner met precies zo'n auto als ik had. De hoes gaat over een paar weken die kant op en begint dan hopelijk aan een nieuw leven!

Heather bear

So here is the finished test-knitted bear. The pattern will result in a bear with smaller hands and a bigger head.

Tick tock

Racing against time to finish the teddy bear pattern as I was stupid enough to promise it for the Arthur Bales newsletter when I was only half finished. Still have to do the head - the most difficult part.

Race tegen de klok om het teddybeerpatroon af te krijgen want ik was zo dom om het te beloven voor de nieuwsbrief van de wolwinkel terwijl ik pas half klaar was. Het hoofd moet nog - het moeilijkste dus.

Itch

Have been very busy, mostly with study and bureaucracy, so not much progress in the crafts department. Sewn a few simple skirts for the girls and myself, knitted a bit, prohibited myself from starting new projects, that's about it. My fingers are itching but it will have to wait as it brings no money in.

Ben erg druk geweest, vooral met studie en bureaucratie, dus weinig vooruitgang wat de handwerken betreft. Paar simpele rokken genaaid voor de meiden en mezelf, beetje gebreid, mezelf verboden om nieuwe projecten te beginnen, dat is het zo'n beetje. Mijn vingers jeuken maar het zal moeten wachten want het brengt geen geld in.

Teddy to be

I'm making a teddybear for my youngest. She is 4 and always lugs around tons of dolls and bears. Interesting phenomenon, as her sister (5) has always been very specific about who could come and who had to stay behind.

The bear's pattern is made up on the spot. I try to keep track so that I can share.

Yummy yarn

Thanks to the sale at Arthur Bales (and the money I earn by writing their irregular newsletter) I bought two skeins of Rowan Colourscape chunky, which is normally wayy too expensive at roughly €20 per skein.

One in a fabulous purple and blue became a clapotis for Phedre. Wasn't so easy to give away ;) The other in olive green and orange is currently becoming a scarf for myself.

Spring knitting

Doing quite nicely on the knitting, but it's all fairly uneventful. Meaning that most of it really didn't warrant a blog post. I've been knitting small stuff for someone I appreciate, who had to go back into chemo after three years. I'm trying to keep her warm through winter with a fleece blanket, a super anti allergic hat, a warm cheerful hat and last week a clapotis (scarf).

By now I'm running out of ideas a bit as it is almost spring and it will quickly be too hot for knitware. Two more sessions to go for her and the last one could render a bottle of bubbly - but since I am a teetotaller I'd rather come up with something else. Also, other people will easily have the same thought. A small bother on the side: I keep forgetting to make pictures of her presents, just wrap them up quickly.

Lost

That light blue cabled hat in lovely baby alpaca, that was so fun to knit but initially fit quite weirdly? It wasn't sold, I adapted to it, it stretched a bit more and we became friends. Then I lost it.

I remember taking it off in my kitchen, in a hurry as I came home late and urgently had to start cooking. I remember quickly "putting it away safely" to avoid the domestic thinking it should be washed (meaning, to avoid a machine wash). Have not seen it since. Can't find it anywhere. Meh. Have looked all over the house to no avail. Won't happen now either as I have builders and I can't find anything at all at the moment.

Die lichtblauwe kabelmuts in heerlijk baby alpaca, die zo leuk was om te breien maar aanvankelijk nogal raar zat? Die werd niet verkocht, ik wende eraan, hij rekte wat uit en we werden vriendjes. Toen raakte ik 'm kwijt.

Ik weet nog dat ik 'm af deed in de keuken, ff snel want laat thuisgekomen en dringend moetende koken. Ik weet nog dat ik hem gauw-gauw "veilig opborg" om te voorkomen dat de poets zou denken dat ie gewassen moest worden (met andere woorden, om een machinewas te vermijden). Sindsdien niet meer gezien. Nergens meer te vinden. Meh. Hele huis op zijn kop gezet zonder resultaat. Zal nu ook niet gebeuren want ik heb bouwvakkers en ik kan nu helemaal niets meer vinden.

On demand in demand

For Dana's book I knitted (and wrote), among other things, two pairs of newborn-sized socklets. After the photo taking Dana gave them back to me and they've been waiting patiently ever since. This week a guy on the course I'm doing told me he will be a first-time father in August so logically, soon after I gave him a tiny present.

To my surprise he returned the next day with not only many thanks (he had only opened it at home with his wife) but also her request to knit more, like a jersey and stuff, for compensation.

Thought about it for a bit and have politely declined. I'm honoured that they ask. But first off, knitting on demand would make it from hobby to work. Meaning I must prioritise it much higher in order to get it completed in a reasonable time. And secondly, I am now too snobby to work with squeaky yarn.

All in all a jersey will easily cost between 400 and 500 Rand. Cheapie but designwise very nice Chinese ones can be had for R30 at the PEP store.
Best I do gifts only I say.

Voor Dana's boek breide (en schreef) ik onder andere twee paar sokjes voor pasgeborenen. Na het maken van de foto's gaf Dana ze terug en sindsdien lagen ze geduldig te wachten. Deze week vertelde een vent van de opleiding die ik doe dat hij in augustus voor het eerst vader wordt, dus kort daarna gaf ik hem een mini-kadootje.

Tot mijn verrassing kwam hij de volgende dag niet alleen hartelijk danken (hij had het pas thuis opengemaakt, met zijn vrouw) maar ook namens haar vragen of ik meer wilde maken, een truitje enzo, tegen betaling.

Ik heb er een tijdje over nagedacht en toen beleefd bedankt. Ik ben vereerd dat ze het vragen. Maar ten eerste, op bestelling breien maakt van mijn hobby werk. Zodat ik het heel hoge prioriteit moet geven om het binnen een redelijke tijdspanne af te hebben. Ten tweede ben ik nu te pedant geworden om nog met piepgaren te werken.

Al met al zal een truitje makkelijk tussen de 400 en 500 Rand kosten (40 à 50 Euro). Terwijl je goedkope maar hartstikke leuke Chinese kleertjes bij de PEP (zeg maar de Zeeman) haalt voor R30 per stuk.
Het lijkt me dat ik beter alleen kadootjes kan breien.
