What is this all about? Is it commercial? Is it local? Who makes money out of this?
Bookcrossing is a non-profit, non-commercial world wide movement to share books. The idea is to take neglected sleepers off your shelves and to leave them in a public place. The finder is asked to report the book at the central website - anonymously if preferred. Thus, the book's travels can be traced through the website and the different views readers have on a book are collected on a unique web page per copy (like this or this).
And finally, hopefully, after having enjoyed the book the reader leaves it in a public place once again.

That's it, basically. All other forms of bookcrossing derive from this idea.
Bookcrossing was thought up by an American, Ron Hornbaker. More on him here. A lengthier explanation on the idea of bookcrossing is available here.

This website is dedicated to the South African bookcrossing movement. Experiences in other countries have shown clearly that the idea of sharing books through bookcrossing takes off much better if support in local languages is available. We hope to, eventually, offer support here in at least Xhosa, Zulu and Afrikaans. We'd love to sport other languages as well; all this depends on the availability of volunteers able to write these languages.
